GeoRSS support in Google Maps

Posted on 26 March 2007 - 10:09

Google has added GeoRSS support to Google Maps and Google Earh. Pretty cool! It's now insanely easy to build your curtom map. Take a look at the instant mashup Jeremy did with his latest pictures!

What would be even cooler now is to have a digital camera with an embedded GPS to avoid the pain of manual geo-tagging :-)

I use a GPS unit separate from my camera, but ensure their clocks are synchronized. Then later you can use gpsPhoto http://www.carto.net/projects/photoTools/gpsPhoto/(or http://freefoote.dview.net/linux_gpscorr.html, or I think there's some Mac software) to correlate the times and set the GPS coordinates into the EXIF headers for you. This obviously has the benefit of allowing you to independently choose whichever camera and GPS unit you prefer to use.

That's right: having separate devices avoids choosing a does-it-all thing that is moderately good at everything but not excellent at anything!

But since I'm lazy, I'd still like a digital camera with a bluetooth connection to the GPS :-)

Correction: We didn't add GeoRSS support to Google Earth :)
